Readers’ Theater Group will be meeting on Mon, Sept 28 at 6:45 p.m. in the common room.

We will be reading aloud the drama Waiting for Lefty, by Clifford Odets. Described as ”one of the most celebrated and significant plays of the modern American theatre,” the play is set in the Depression era, and deals with the cynical exploitation of the working classes. The action of the play includes a series of varied vignettes, including: a hiring hall where a union leader (obviously in the pay of the bosses) is trying to convince a committee of workers (who are waiting for their leader, Lefty, to arrive) not to strike; a confrontation between a discouraged taxi driver who can’t earn enough to live on and his angry wife; a poignant episode centering on a young cabbie and his would-be bride, who lack the wherewithal to get married; and others. This play honors one of Chalice’s two congregation-wide social justice issues: Economic Justice.
