Indigenous-Led Service of Celebration:  Indigenous Peoples Day

Joint Service with Palomar UU Fellowship

Sunday October 9 – Location:  Felicita Park

 

Multigenerational Service: All are welcome to join this special celebration to honor the cultures and perseverance of the Original Peoples of this land. We continue Moving on the Side of Love by uniting in celebration with our local Tribal Communities, as well as with interfaith and community groups nationwide, in this social justice movement for racial equity.  This celebration will be led by Sam Beltram (Ute Nation), featuring local Tribal speakers Chris Devers (‪Luiseño / Pauma Band of Mission Indians),  Jimmy Igo (Ajachemen/Kumeyaay/Tongva Nations), Diania Caudell (member of the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians) and Mel Vernon (member of the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians).

 

A cash offering will be accepted during the service and donated equally between the Kumeyaay Community College and a Luiseño Organization to be announced.  Alternatively, donations can be made by texting to (760) 280-9599, enter the dollar amount, add a space and type “Justice” and your donation will be shared equally between these organizations.

 

Felicita County Park is in Escondido at 742 Clarence Lane.  The park entrance is located on Felicita Road, where Clarence Lane ends. Driving Directions in the Park

After entering the park, go to the left at the fork.  Follow the road around a bend to the right and then park; for disabled parking continue to the lower level next to the grass.  We will be in Picnic Area 4 (map attached).

 

You are welcome to bring specific seating to meet your needs.  Chairs and benches will be available.  There are areas with uneven ground and support will be provided as needed.

 

 

Potluck Meal & Virtual Coffee Hour –You’re invited

After the service, we invite you to continue the celebration as we share a communal meal together in the park; online participants are gathering at Virtual Coffee Hour on Zoom.  If you are willing and able, please bring food to share for the potluck.  To assist our guests with allergies and special diets, please consider labeling your dish with ingredients.

COVID Safety Precautions

We are masking and keeping a safe distance during the service. During our potluck, we are also keeping safe distance while unmasked. We have color coded stickers available to wear if you wish to communicate your physical contact comfort level:

 

  • Red = Let’s wave hello at each other
  • Yellow = Elbow bump or fist bump is fine
  • Green = Comfortable with hugs
